Between the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, Montenegro is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Are you torn between rafting on the Tara River or canyoning in the Škurda canyon?

Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, Montenegro is an ideal destination for outdoor activity enthusiasts. Are you torn between rafting on the Tara River or canyoning in the Škurda canyon? Between exploring the Bay of Kotor by kayak or trekking in Durmitor National Park? It's understandable—the country is brimming with natural wonders! Here are all our must-do activities for a sporting adventure in Montenegro…

1. Rafting on the Tara River

The Tara River flows through the famous canyon of the same name. First descended in 1957 by a French club, "the Tara" is hugely popular with rafting enthusiasts. Stretching over 80 kilometers, it promises thrilling sensations and exceptional views of Durmitor National Park and Sutjeska National Park (located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Tara River also flows). The months of April-May are recommended for rafting—after the snowmelt, when the river is at its most powerful.

2. Canyoning on the Škurda River

Located north of Kotor, the Škurda River (or "Scurda") is a magical place for canyoning. To reach the canyon entrance, you'll first need to walk for about forty minutes. Then you can abseil down into its dramatic gorges (nestled in the Bay of Boka) and enjoy its many spectacular landscapes (steep hillsides, natural pools, cliffs, and more). You should be in good physical condition, be able to swim, and go between April and October.

3. Via Ferrata – one of Montenegro's must-do sporting activities

Via Ferrata allows you to explore nature via a route arranged along a rocky cliff face. In addition to offering exceptional panoramas, this outdoor activity promises intense emotions! Located at the exit of Škurda Canyon, the Via Ferrata of Kotor offers breathtaking views over the Bay of Boka and the splendid San Giovanni fortress, which encircles the old town! This activity is suited to very athletic individuals.

4. Exploring the Bay of Kotor by kayak

The Bay of Kotor forms an elongated, narrow inlet that opens onto the Adriatic Sea. Similar to fjords, the Boka Kotorska (as they're known in Montenegrin) represent a natural curiosity perfect for kayaking. With numerous circuits, they boast just as many points of interest!

Among them? Splendid beaches (far from the hustle and bustle), charming fishing villages, and medieval ruins. Paddling expeditions also allow you to reach Bisevo Island, known for its "blue grotto"—a magnificent cavity hidden in the Bay of Balun. Kayaking is accessible to all and requires no prior experience.

5. Trekking and mountain biking in Durmitor National Park

Located in Žabljak, Durmitor National Park (inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List) is a premier trekking destination. Among its must-see attractions:

-       Bobotov Kuk: Standing at 2,528 meters above sea level, it's the highest peak in the massif (and a challenging climb).

-       Ledena Pecina ice cave: Perched at 2,160 meters above sea level, in the Obla Glava mountain, the Durmitor ice cave is a narrow passage through rock. Steep, spanning roughly 40 meters, the cave proudly displays its ice stalagmites!

-       Crno jezero: The famous "black lake" is considered one of Montenegro's most beautiful. It actually consists of two lakes, called Veliko and Malo.

Durmitor is also prized for its countless mountain biking routes. The most famous is Prevoj Sedlo. This established road (located at over 1,900 meters altitude), which connects Žabljak and Plužine, allows you to admire the Stožina peak and Valovito Jezero lake.

6. Walking around Lake Biograd

Within Biogradska Gora National Park, you'll find Lake Biograd. Surrounded by century-old trees, it's located in an area renowned for its biodiversity. A perfect opportunity to observe numerous bird species and discover more than 220 plant species! The walk around the lake is known for its serene atmosphere and can be enjoyed with children.

7. Scuba diving and exploring wrecks – for a complete sporting adventure in Montenegro!

Montenegro's coastlines are highly prized by diving enthusiasts due to their cliffs, cavities, and numerous wrecks (warships or merchant vessels)! Whether an amateur or experienced diver, you'll be amazed by this underwater world of unsuspected richness! Diving is recommended from June onwards.
