Montenegro's Currency

·

Montenegro has experienced financial challenges shaped by its history. Previously, the Deutsche Mark circulated there until the euro replaced it at the beginning of 2002. Yet the country remains outside the European Union and is not technically in the eurozone. However, thanks to the SAA (Stabilisation and Association Agreement) signed between the country and the EU, Montenegro can use the euro as legal tender.

As a result, Montenegro's central bank cannot influence this currency, which is issued on its territory by a third party. Thus, the land of the Great Mountain does not possess its own national currency.

Settling Your Expenses in Montenegro

For English-speaking visitors and Europeans, it is straightforward to settle restaurant bills and other purchases in Montenegro. Since the country uses the euro, merchants accept cash.

You can also use your bank card to pay for your expenses. Visa and MasterCard are accepted, unlike American Express, for example. Cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants, but it is still advisable to carry some cash on you, particularly for the more modest restaurants.
